Considering before tonight HFC had only let in 18 goals in 23 games, we've done well to get 2

Quite an eventful game and very enjoyable - in the end.
The first half hour we were simply dismal. Conceded early and were lucky not to concede more. I'm not sure that we ever managed to play more than two passes without losing the ball. Then we started to improve and got level against the run of play when Jerson hit a good shot which the keeper kept out, but Ronnie followed up to score. Ira almost put us in front, denied by a good save, then Callum was red carded for what was a mystery to all of us at the far end, but apparently he was the last man.
At the start of the second half Cugs surprised us all by actually making the obviously correct substitution, Finn on to give us four at the back and Jerson off. In the second half, 10 against 11, we played our socks off, with Scott Heard and Ira outstanding. Second goal was similar to the first, with the keeper producing a great save to deny Scott but Alfie netting the rebound from a tight angle. The second half was nearly all us, especially after the ref evened things up by sending off one of theirs. Their fans said it was a joke decision; given some of the ref's other decisions in that second half, maybe it was. They then lost another player to injury and there was only one winner from that point on. We would have won by a few more if not for their keeper who made some terrific saves.
Tremendous result in a game we really had to win.
Given how we played with ten men in the second half, can't help wondering whether we might not be better off at the moment playing 4-4-2 with Ira and Johan up front.

Well that was quite a topsy turvy game! Well done to all the lads though! We really dug in at times and worked hard when we were a man light. First 15-20mins we weren't good at all. We couldn't keep the ball, conceded the goal in the first 2mins which was just a flick header from a long free kick - should've been much better defended. We could've been 2 down at least. We gradually got better as the first half wore on and although the goal came from nothing really, it was well deserved for the chances we were beginning to get. Anyone actually know what the Davies red card was for..? Some saying last man, some that it was a bad challenge...bit of both maybe (?) Less than ideal but came at a good time on the stroke of half time to make a change & re-group. Second half was a bit of a crazy game ! We were all over them for the first 5mins! Their gk made a top save from a free kick & then Alfie squeezed in a rebound from the tightest of angles. 2-1! From that point forward it was mostly one way traffic towards our goal (although no stand out chances).....until the Hornchurch sending off with about 20mins to go. Absolutely nuts challenge to make when you have a man advantage & it completely changed the game in our favour. Thank you Hornchurch ! We were the better side after that & had a lot of chances & their keeper pulled off some really good saves. Loved the banter as well the fat c*nt! Ira MoM..another quality performance, ran his socks off & is majestic when running with the ball. 3 in midfield were excellent. Paxman a handful again. Quiet game for Kieran but feeling his way back into things maybe. Well done to Cugs for the half time switch (bringing Jerson off), proved pivotal. I feel sorry for Jerson. He's completely out of form & doesn't look like he can buy a goal at the moment, yet Cugs still continues to play him?? I understand Cugs wants a target man for the long balls but he just can't hold the ball up. He isn't doing himself any favour's with supporters though by pulling out of challenges, not offering for the ball much & really just looking generally disinterested. The team is carrying him at the moment & he needs some time on the bench to take him out of the firing line. Well done to Hornchurch fans! Made a lot of noise & well supported. Decent side who came to give us a game. They'll be in around the play off's come the end of the season.

Without Callum getting in the way their player may well have been in on goal, he was flying along. So he took one for the team, although it was a heavy price.
Hornchurch surprised me by crumbling somewhat at 2:1. Mind you, Ira was terrorising their back line, they couldn't handle him. Heardy was everywhere too. All the lads really turned on the style second half, but for some top quality saves from their goalie the margin could have been bigger. Great player!
This was one of the most impressive wins for me this season against a tough team (and tall).
Special mention for the ref who made some truly bizarre decisions.

From the mighty PA Hut again me and Ade both agreed that the Hornchurch Red Card was definitely a Red and we had a better view then the ref.
We absolutely worked hard second half them going down to 9 helped that we showed real character to hang on and push for another we did everything right in that second half whatever was said in the dressing room at Half Time lifted the lads Mr Cugley got it right tonight.
Alfie, Scott and Ira all excellent tonight Finn did well stepping in after Callum’s dismissal which once again me and Adrian thought was a Red card.
Great win puts us 7 points clear of Cray who are third and have played the same amount of games!

By their managers own admission their striker was not catching up with that ball at any point. Being 6 foot 4 plus pace isn’t his strong point. Nevertheless don’t think it was a great challenge.
Not Jerson bashing here at all but the bloke quite simply isn’t a target man. Play some superb football to feet at times with players like Dolan Heardy etc with width from the fullbacks. But forever pumping the ball up to a striker with no confidence and grease on his boots is not helping the team. If Cugley doesn’t ask his strikers to defend then play with two up top, stretch the other team. No defender will want to go near Ira when he pulls them out wide, and with Heardy non stop running in a more advanced position tonight when down to 10 men, you’d have enough men in the box So in short, stop the long balls every time

Couldn't agree more, jbm. I've been sticking up a bit for Jerson because some of the stick he's been getting from people has been a bit over the top, but there's no getting away from the fact that it's not working for him at the moment and it probably is time for a rest. Two up front would work because, as you say, we've got midfielders (Scott, Kieran) who get forward quickly, as does Alfie when the opportunity's there. We were forced into it tonight, but I think we saw how it could work. And if it meant that we couldn't play long ball anymore, then so much the better, because it doesn't work for us, period; whereas, when we get it down and play we can tear teams apart with the pace and skill we have. We saw that yet again tonight.

What an exciting second half... we seemed to be inspired by Alfie`s goal from what seemed an impossible angle. It put us 2-1 up, despite being down to ten men, following Callum`s sending off. We had equalized their third-minute goal and seemed to be getting on top and then, disastrously, some sloppy play forced Callum into a last-ditch tackle which he mistimed. Red Card and off. Right on half time too.
From the restart, we sat back, and pretty much left Ira (superb tonight!) up top on his own, but managed to still look more dangerous than we had in the first half! There were some terrific performances all over the park. Kieron proved tonight what I have been saying all season, that he is a far better midfield player than a winger. Ira was awesome too and but for some amazing goalkeeping from their keeper would have had another hat trick.
After they too had a player sent off, (by a truly awful and inept referee tonight ) we started to control things, but still could not seem to get that third goal to finish the game. Consequently, we had some hairy moments towards the end, defending some unnecessary free kicks which could well have given them an equalizer.
This tonight showed tremendous team spirit in the side and bodes well for the rest of the season.
I totally agree with Stumpy that we should now go to a 4-4-2 . Apparently Jerson has been carrying a bit of a groin for some time. It shows in his recent performances. Ira showed tonight that he can work the channels. Why not put Johan up there with him who also has the pace to use that space and move Kieron to midfield!
That would make the best use of our available squad, it seems to me. ( And lets see some more of young Tyler Sterling ! )

Sending off galvanised the support and possibly the lads. Fans were right into the ref and a lot more noise in general second half and the lads came out like a team wanting to fight against an injustice. Every one of them deserves credit for that display.

Still excited after that game. Can't get to sleep My team for Saturday would be : Tim Roberts Josh Vincent Mat Newman Finn O Mara Alfie Paxman Michael Everitt Ronnie Dolan Kieron MCann Scott Heard Johan Der Horst Ira Jackson This is playing four in midfield, but as a diamond. Mev at the base and Scott at the tip with Kieron left and Ronnie right. This gives our full-backs the space to bomb on when on and also gives Johan and Ira the opportunity to use their pace to work the channels. Best use of our available players I think. I would also give Tyler some game time at some stage in the game. ( Still awake, so excited after that game tonight

Great game after a poor start .Team showed spirit ,good football (on the floor) and more composure, in the last 20,than we have been of late. Saw gerrys team for Saturday ,thought I'd do the same Newcombe ,jv ,Newman ,Finn ,Blanks ,Mev ,Dolan ,Heard , Alfie ,Johan ,Ira. Alfie must be pushed forward ,McCann puts in a good shift but no end product for me .Enforced substitution but the right one 🤗
