Bit self entitled, built on the back of the demise of:- Canterbury city Ashford, Maidstone. us, all went down the pan late 80s / early 90s, benefitted from other’s misfortune, in that they’re demise just so happened to be a few years before. To claim we’ve nicked they’re fans….. jeez They’ve gotta realise they’re inflated gates was due to the demise of many local clubs coinciding with their growth, the next generation won’t travel past all these locations to pay twice as much for half as bad football. Does Dover offer value for money

Definitely something in what you say, Steve. I know a few people who live in Folkestone and Hythe who are regulars at Dover because they see it as a better class of football than they can see here or at Reachfields. Right now that isn't the case, apart from the standard of the opposition, and so those "fairweather" fans are less inclined to go. Even for the long time Dover supporters, shelling out £18 every other Saturday to watch your team getting dicked must get pretty soul-destroying after a while. I don't wish them any ill because, as you say, other clubs have gone under in the past (including Folkestone Town) and I don't want that to happen to them, but there is a lesson there that if you pump money in trying to buy a success that your fan base can't support, sooner or later it's going to end in tears.

if you pump money in trying to buy a success that your fan base can't support, sooner or later it's going to end in tears. Where's our natural position then? Our fan base has grown year on year it seems. I was generally worried several years ago that it was an old boys club, with no new, younger fans. That has changed dramatically. Consequently we're currently getting average crowds of 837 which is 2nd highest in our league. If we were doing poorly this season - I mean bottom half - what would our crowds be? 380? 400? That would still put us in the top 8 for attendances. If we get to National South: Bad season average: 400? That's level with the bottom handful in NLS. Good season average: 1100? That's top 5 in NLS. I think we'd be a middling club in NLS, both in club structure & fanbase. That currently feels like our sustainable level. Any higher and that would be a struggle. Just as they are finding out over the hill.

I think you've kind of answered your own question, Dunc - we should be an NLS club. I'm not sure I would want us to go any higher; to be competitive, we would need a lot more money than we are currently capable of generating and, as some of the Dover fans are nostalgically pointing out, football is more fun below the National League.

After the madness of the last.. say 20 years, any success the club has is organic. This is what we need to keep on doing. We get to NLS, we sustain our position, we grow. Any other way is just inviting boom and bust.

Wrexham (Deadpool Fc) would’ve had a fair few of those too.
