Even though we had the majority of the chances, just not at the races. Poor finishing from us today. Real shame.

Thought we looked good for about 35 mins in the first half and then they come on really strong and got their goal. Second half was a better performance from us, I would have been happy with a draw, but unfortunately they got the third which saw us off. Hopefully we will get a result against Leatherhead on Monday.

We rarely produce our best on plastic surfaces, and so it proved today.
We started well and looked the better side early on, but their goal, a defensive slip that allowed their eleven and nine in on goal, led to the opener. They had been struggling to handle Ade before the goal and we had had a number of chances to take the lead, but that goal seemed to give them a big lift.
Then Ade goes down with a thigh injury and things started to look not so good for us. We had the benefit of a strong wind behind us second half but on this bouncy pitch, it was hardly a benefit to our lads. Their second was also against the run of play but really made our task difficult now.
Mev made way for Draycs without really changing the shape or the way we were playing. Their twin centre backs were well on top up the centre. I felt we needed to change it around a bit more at this point. Alfie was looking good so why not push him up to wing-back with Kieron going inside for Mev. Could have put Jordan on in the right flank and gone with wing-backs.
Anyway, we were pushing on and trying to add to Kieron's goal which had made it 2-1. But another slip at the back let them in to make it 3-1 and it was game over.
We will definitely play better back at Cheriton Rd but the injury to Ade is a big worry. Time to change it about a bit I feel.

4th. I believe Lewes go above us on goals scored (points and goal difference identical). 3 points covering 2nd to 6th. Stiff competition for the playoff spots (yes I realise the run in is months off - a lot can happen by then).

Earlier posts seem to be looking at the performance today through rose- tinted specs and whilst we try to be supportive we shouldn’t ignore a number of shortcomings that were apparent today. With the best will in the world Margate were good value for their win and we can have no complaints. The plastic surface is quicker and bouncier with the consequence that it exposed the lack of pace in our back line. Their numbers 7, 9 and 11 were simply too quick and skilful. I have to disagree that we were on top during the first as he tends to do in recent matches.half. Yes we should have put away 2 good chances but at best all we achieved was to stem the tide . We played long ball into the wind for the entire half and it simply played into Margate’s hands as the ball was ballooning back towards our goal making the long ball so easy to defend. After a few over hit long balls picked up by the wind at the start of the second half the penny seemed to drop and we started to play short and recovered the score to 2-1 . We then seemed to be gaining control and there was hope we could find an equaliser which was extinguished when Tim Roberts went walkabout as he has tended to do in recent matches. The lady ref has done well on a couple of visits to Cheriton Road but had a bit of an indifferent game today. David Smith and Ade were groped and manhandled by the Margate defence so often I can only imagine that Margate had some tactical training from Ghislaine Maxwell. To be fair she should probably put JV and Callum Davies in the book for blatant body checks so I guess it balances the books. Worrying to see Ade go off and let’s hope it is not too serious. We really need to think seriously about the over use of long ball and let us hope for better on Monday

I must admit. The shape today didn’t work. We looked very open! However, we had the better chances and certainly more of them. Missed two sitters from 3 yards out! I don’t think all our players really turned it on today, but yet we was still very much in the game. Must win Monday.

Ade and Smithy get manhandled in every game we play and rarely get a decision whether the ref is male or female but today you think they were hard done by? Happy new year.

Happy New Year to you gerryhan. Sad to hear that plastic pitches (as you like to call them), are such a hinderance to your performances, but surely not every defeat or poor performance can be blamed on the playing surface?? I'm afraid that 3G/4G surfaces are the only way ahead for most non-league sides as a constant source of revenue income. It is a little sad when teams lose a game that the pitch is at fault.

I'm afraid that 3G/4G surfaces are the only way ahead for most non-league sides as a constant source of revenue income. It is a little sad when teams lose a game that the pitch is at fault. Or, I guess, one could make a club financially sustainable by living within its means without relying on a pitch that can be hired out to paying customers, and invest instead in proper drainage that ensures that the pitch is playable for >99% of the season. When you see players slipping over in situations in which they wouldn't on grass (on which their studs could gain proper purchase into the surface) then a little dissatisfaction with an artificial pitch is probably understandable... Personally, I've never liked the fact that playing on a plastic pitch - which is an unfamiliar experience to the majority of teams - gives even more of an advantage (some may say, an unfair one) to the home team.

...easy to defend synthetic pitches when you're (deservedly) top of the league.
We do train on one though.

Margate 4 Worthing 2 plastic v plastic top v 8th funny old world innit Good point, well made. Didn't mean to take anything away from Margate's performance today, whatever the surface on which the match was played. Their 9 and 11 in particular stood out, and number 7. Defence was very strong too. I think we've got used to Yusuff and Smith having their own way in front of goal, and today was a a wake-up call. All credit to Margate. Even if (my dad reports) the coffee was "the worst he'd had in his life". Glad I went for the IPA instead.

Uuumm, interesting point "colash", but you have only won 11 of 21 games. I Suppose that can be blamed on plastic as well?. Or is it injuries or covid??

We do the "not losing" thing. So when we do it's odd and we look for a reason.

Another Worthing fan here but with maybe a different point.
As an old git I was totally anti plastic especially after seeing the original ones in action but now I'm a convert. Not because of the revenue (which of course will diminish as more and more of them are installed) but rather because of the better football you see as a result. Hoofball doesn't work on plastic; it rewards balls to feet, accurate passing etc. I think at step 3 that gets rewarded, I'm told that at steps 1+2 that isn't necessarily the case due to the style of defending.
In my view playing on plastic works but there are then problems on the Potters Bar type pitches for a team that isn't used to it.
Anyway good luck (apart from obviously when we meet in the league)
Kenty

Disappointed in the result of course, but apart from the possibility of losing Ade, we will recover from this.
Well informed response on here as usual 😉

...easy to defend synthetic pitches when you're (deservedly) top of the league. We do train on one though. the team hasn’t trained on the 3G pitch since June, before pre-season began. Carshalton was the first time any of them would have played on plastic since then.
