We win 4-3 on penalties! COYS!! I'm taking all the credit for that. As for the game, the wind was difficult, but even so I don't think I've ever seen us pass so badly. Two good goals to go 2-0 up, then what looked like a howler from Henry to put them back in the game (although someone said he was pushed - the video will reveal all), and then a softish equaliser that seemed to happen in slow motion as a glancing header at the near post trickled past Henry, hit the far post and went in. Second half we hit the post twice and had a few shots blocked, but you felt we weren't going to score. Their keeper was clearly playing for penalties with his time-wasting - didn't work, did it. And Gerry, straight question, do you still think Finn is better suited to midfield than playing in defence?

My brother called me at half time to say that he had forgotten that we had a game tonight. Some people have all the luck!! If ever there was a game to miss this was it. Passes going astray, chances being missed, and a nice two-goal advantage simply thrown away by poor goalkeeping ( Henry redeemed himself somewhat with his two penalty saves .. but he owed us those ) We improved somewhat in the second half and had most of the possession but encountered another goalkeeper in defiant mode whom we could not beat. We had gone 2-0 up early doors with goals from Johan and Ira, then proceeded to gift them two goals and went in at the break 2-2. When we started hitting the post and crossbar in that second half you knew it was not going to happen, and penalties beckoned. Tyler, who had been having a quiet evening on the left, switched to the right and lit up the evening for the last twenty or so. A real talent, this boy. And so to a penalty shoot out. Two good saves from Henry and a classy penalty from the classy Matt Newman wins the shoot out for us and on we go to the semi-final, ( Rather unconvincingly it must be said!)

He did not look comfortable there tonight John I agree, and his passing was all over the place. He looked to me like a player under pressure. What are your feelings about Johan in that center forward role?

No worries about the water Joel, none at all on the playing surface..Seems someone turned on the stop cock which is actually in the home team dressing room late afternoon resulting a rather wet area around the sprinkler outlet 2/3 yards from the touch line, the assistant ref didn’t need wellies .We do make hard work beating lower teams in our league....

Everyone played well, except those that didn't. Passing was on point, except when it wasn't. It was all a bit meh! Tyler looked a threat in the second half and got off a couple of decent shots erm.... That's it.

Liam, thanks for the video. I'm sure it would have worked out differently if I'd stayed to watch.

Gerry, in answer to your question about Jo. We know Jo isn't a target man - we didn't have one last night so we needed our passing to be quick and accurate, and it was anything but. I thought both Jo and Ira were making good runs, especially in the first half, that weren't being spotted, or if they were the passes were either underhit (first half) or overhit (second half) and so were wasted. One of those games, I suppose, and the wind was difficult.
Jo's goal was good though - really sharp and a clever finish.

Problem at the moment is the midfield. We’ve lost all consistency in there and it’s become a mess. Finn can do a decent job in there but not with Heardy sitting deep next to him and Draycott ahead, can only see it being a good fit if he’s able to sit and use his defensive abilities and physical attributes to protect the back 4 while others are left to use the ball. Massive missing both Hasler and Dolan at the minute, Mev can’t play every game either. Heardy is stifled from doing what he does best when he has to sit deeper and hasn’t scored since we lost Hasler to injury. Hopefully the two lads are back soon and we get back to a much more balanced midfield.

Completely agree with that. Real lack of creativity at the moment, left to forwards to create something for themselves. Work rate only gets you so far.

Anthony, spot on about Heardy playing too deep - presumably to accommodate Draycs in midfield. He is the by far the best attacking midfielder we have.

He is the by far the best attacking midfielder we have. think it’s more the issue of having little to play behind him. Him and Kieron worked ok at Worthing, just sit deep and soak it up and we sucker punched them. When it comes to breaking teams down we’re missing his attacking runs and desire to create chances. He gives the ball away more than the others in midfield but that’s because he’s trying to make things happen, and having twice as many assists as anyone is a great return. They’ve dried up a bit too of late. Potentially good news on the injury front soon though, touch wood!

Only just finding out I’m very unprepared to make a penalty shootout look good on a highlights package! Hopefully we won’t have any more and can sort it in the summer!

Yes Jo obviously needs to play off a target man, or his runs need to be picked up and fed.
Neither is happening for him at the moment so his strengths e.g his finishing is wasted, if you can put it that way.
Now with the arrival of Roman his opportunities may be further limited.

Agree with you Gerry,Johan imo reads the game better than others around him, probably having been involved at a higher level, and does finish well,eg that smart goal on Tuesday along with his clinical penalty.Maybe with Roman he could play like he did when Booth and Taylor were upfront...
