Given the high wind and fairly rutted pitch, this was never going to be a game for the purists! So it proved. It was an out and out battle for possession. I think it is fair to say that we won that battle, with some big hearts and some exceptional finishing.
Mev had to go off early doors ( Achilles injury I heard ) so Finn had to go straight into the middle of the fray and win some ball for us. Which he did. We were facing a really strong wind in that first half, but we were more than holding our own and then just before the break, Ira broke free down the left and put us ahead with a low left-footed drive along the ground and in off the far post. Brilliant.
So we went in 1-0 at the break despite having had to face a veritable gale in that first half. I felt quietly confident at this point. Wind behind us in the second, we should be OK. So it proved. Another dangerous move involving Kieron and Heardie, and Heardie puts us 2-0 up ( compliment of a small deflection from a defender! ). He worked his socks off all game Heardie and deserved that.
The big surprise for us fans was the quality of our third goal from Jerson. A nice low drive from just inside the box inside the near post. He had been having a very unproductive game up till then, but the strike seemed to help his confidence and his game improved too. So 3-0 to us and about twenty to go.
Invicta never make it easy for us following, and Tim, under a lot of pressure, (looked a free to me) dropped a corner and its 3-1. Game on. But not really, we held on easily enough, and almost added a fourth on a couple of occasions.! A well earned hard-won three away points for the lads.
Shame about Worthing getting a penalty in the 95th minute.!
